WEST Austin Studio Tour

Being a die hard EAST fan, and knowing how tight Big Medium runs their EAST tour -- I was psyched when they announced their first year of WEST. Psyched 'cuase I knew it meant a chance to see some new (to me) killer art in Austin. The WEST catalog was just as spectacular as the EAST. Beautifully done and loaded with images. Didn't have my usual EAST posse with me, but had the perfect friend fill in (although his navigation skills were the worst distracted skills I've ever seen -- possibly caused by all the free booze the artists plied us with). Now, on with the show ...
This was our first stop -- a group show packed with tons of great pieces. Graphic/ color/ detail/ mountains of visual stimulation. Richard Ashby
A powerful collection of Buddha statues and Thangka paintings. Amazing. We didn't stay for the guided tour explaining the pieces because my art partner couldn't handle the vibe and ran out. Needless to say, no free booze here.
Then there was Adreon Henry. One of the most creative of creatives in Austin. His shows are always done so right. No exception here. His house/studio was set up with creative explosions going in every corner. I hope you made it by because it really looked amazing and wall to wall crazy unique art. Perfect vibe. I wanted to buy every piece, literally. Groupie. Stalker.
Oh man. Seriously oh man. Hands down best discovery was Manik Nakra. I couldn't get over/past his pieces. Incredible and powerful. A methodical presentation of deep rich color and history. Currently in behind-closed-door talks about owning one of his brilliant pieces.
Yes. How about that collection? Obsessive, maybe ...
Want! Jason Archer. Best pieces. Graphically -- crazy! So on point and the perfect balance between meaning and humor.
This one's my favorite. So good. His studio was another one set up so perfectly. Loved the vibe and every single one of his pieces.
Kafka Lenton. Layers upon layers of meaning and visual discovering. You can see/feel the process in his pieces. Mixed media and painting just rich with texture and power. Was in awe of his show at EAST and equally blown away by this show. It was the last stop of the day for me. And it was perfect.

Friends with Benefits

Collage art and its process are ridiculously addicting and when there's a chance to make a piece for friends and family, we are on it! Melissa's daughter hit the big 10 -- so naturally I thought, she wants art! Knowing that Eva's a die hard Blondie fan, I went straight for some Debbie Harry action. Found the perfect image of Debbie Harry from back in the day all crazy on stage (had to pg-13 the image & cover the total undies shot).
Got my hands on the most unbelievable neon glow in the dark looking plexiglas - yes it literally glows.
And cranked out this neon yellow & red piece:
Oh Debbie, you are so the best.
Happy B-day Miss Eva.

Slackers

I know we've been slacking on the post, but it's because we've been busy getting ready for the Handmade Austin Women Show. It's on the east side at 1145 Perry Road Austin, TX 78721. Pictures of new art to come!

House Number Eye Candy

It's been a sea of opaque colors lately. Bold, and to the point. Usually, spring brings out the light blues & oranges in people. But our recent productions have been satured solids. Rebellious badasses.

Just our type.

We Crafty

We were asked to be part of an art show with a "music theme" for Hyde Park Grill during SXSW. Well, duh, of course! We're both music freaks and it was a chance for us to work together on art pieces (aka drink beer). The process was so much fun - and we're pumped with the results.

We decided to do art pieces based around songs. Half the fun was coming up with the songs.
The first one that came to fruition was Steve Miller Band - "Space Cowboy."
This one happened like magic. Came together perfectly. Then the brainstorming started. We really wanted to do "Maneater" by Hall and Oates. After a few hours of digging through magazines and drinking beers, we found her. Watch out boy she'll chew you up (sorry, couldn't resist).Notice Nelly?Which brings us to the hip-hop theme. We knew we had to do a Beastie Boys song, well, just because. But couldn't think of which one. Hung over one Sunday morning I dug through magazines and found this hot little lady. She's crafty, yo.Last, we had this amazing pic of Angela Davis we'd been saving for something special. We found it.Public Enemy "Fight the Power."So simple. So powerful.

We have art at both Hyde Park Grill locations during March. So check-ch-check it out.

Owl Art

That's right owl art! Since I clearly have an obsessive love for owls, what could be better than making owl art!? Bam - making owl art for a friend, of course. The whole process of creating for friends is rad because you get to include nuances that may not mean a thing in the world to others, but certainly bring home the bacon for said friend. My only parameter on the piece was to include an owl. End result - "Forrest of Knowledge." It's a little dark and leaves lots of open doors for interpretation. I like that. And look at the shadows. If I do say so myself ... awesome! And, it comes with it's very own mixtape. Since music is such a big part of Modplexi, thought it would be a great bonus/surprise to open up the package of art, and find a mixtape waiting there. Loaded down with tracks inspired by the art. A win win!!

Thanks M. for the opportunity.
